Alex Len Chooses Lakers Over Pacers in NBA Free Agency Shuffle

Veteran center Alex Len will not be signing with the Indiana Pacers as initially reported, according to league sources. Len, who was traded from the Sacramento Kings to the Washington Wizards at the trade deadline and subsequently waived, had been expected to join the Pacers after clearing waivers. However, the deal fell through, with Indiana pivoting to sign former lottery pick Jahlil Okafor to a 10-day contract instead.

The change in plans appears to be linked to shifting dynamics in the NBA’s center market, including the Lakers’ inability to complete a trade for Mark Williams due to issues discovered during his physical. This left Los Angeles with a significant need for frontcourt depth, prompting them to pursue Len. The Lakers will waive Christian Wood to make room for Len on their roster.

Len, the fifth overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, has spent 12 seasons in the league, playing for the Suns, Hawks, Raptors, Wizards, and Kings. In recent years, he has served as a depth piece, averaging 3.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in 10.0 minutes per game over three-and-a-half seasons with Sacramento. While his role has been limited, Len’s size and experience make him a valuable addition for the Lakers as they aim to bolster their frontcourt for the remainder of the season.

The Lakers, who recently traded Anthony Davis for Luka Dončić, are in need of reliable big men to complement their star-studded lineup. Len’s decision to join Los Angeles over Indiana reflects the Lakers’ ability to offer a more prominent role and a better basketball situation, with Dončić and LeBron James providing elite playmaking opportunities. The move also positions Len to showcase his skills ahead of free agency in 2025.
