Asteroid 2024 YR4; A Growing Concern for Earth's Future
An asteroid named 2024 YR4, measuring between 130 and 300 feet across, has a small but increasing chance of hitting Earth on December 22, 2032, according to NASA. Initially estimated at a 1.2% probability, the odds of impact have risen to 2.3% (1 in 43) as of February 2025. While the likelihood remains low, the asteroid’s trajectory is being closely monitored by astronomers worldwide.
Discovered on December 27, 2024, by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Chile, 2024 YR4 is being tracked using ground-based telescopes and NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. If it were to strike Earth, the asteroid could cause localized damage due to its high velocity of approximately 38,000 mph, but it is not large enough to pose a global threat.
The International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) has issued its first-ever alert for 2024 YR4, urging astronomers to gather more data to refine its orbit and assess the risk. Observations will continue through April 2025, after which the asteroid will become too faint to track until 2028. NASA emphasizes that while the probability of impact is being reassessed, the chances remain extremely low, and further observations could rule out the hazard entirely.
The asteroid’s discovery has also highlighted the importance of planetary defense efforts, such as NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), which successfully altered the orbit of an asteroid in 2022. However, any potential mitigation efforts for 2024 YR4 would require years of planning and precise data about its composition and trajectory.
For now, experts advise against panic, as the asteroid’s impact probability is expected to decrease with further observations. The situation underscores the need for continued vigilance in tracking near-Earth objects to protect the planet from potential threats.
