BJP Secures Victory in Delhi Assembly Elections After 27 Years
The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the results of the Delhi Assembly elections on February 8, 2025. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 48 out of 70 seats, paving the way for forming the government in Delhi after 27 years. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was reduced to 22 seats, while the Congress once again failed to open its account.
BJP’s Parvesh Verma defeated AAP’s convenor and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat. However, AAP’s Atishi defeated BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri in the Kalkaji seat. After the election results, Atishi resigned from the post of Chief Minister. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has ordered the dissolution of the Assembly.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing party workers at the BJP office, said that this reflects the public’s trust in development. He promised to clean the Yamuna River and accused AAP of corruption.
AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal met with the newly elected MLAs of the party after the electoral defeat and instructed them to serve the public. He said that AAP would play the role of a constructive opposition.
BJP leaders accused AAP of corruption and false promises, stating that the new government would focus on cleaning the Yamuna and other development works. Party leader Manoj Tiwari said that a policy of zero tolerance against corruption would be adopted.
The BJP’s victory in the Delhi elections is being seen as a major achievement for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). At the same time, the defeat of AAP and Congress has posed challenges for the opposition alliance, INDIA.
