Cleveland Cavaliers Acquire De’Andre Hunter in Strategic NBA Trade
The Cleveland Cavaliers have made a significant move ahead of the NBA trade deadline, acquiring forward De’Andre Hunter from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Caris LeVert, Georges Niang, three second-round picks (2027, 2029, and 2031), and two pick swaps. The deal, reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, addresses the Cavaliers’ need for a versatile wing player while also helping the team avoid the luxury tax.
Hunter, a 6-foot-8 forward, is averaging career-highs of 19.0 points and 39.3% from three-point range this season, making him a strong candidate for Sixth Man of the Year. Despite battling injuries earlier in his career, Hunter has been a consistent contributor for the Hawks, playing in 37 games this season. His addition is expected to bolster Cleveland’s starting lineup, which has seen multiple players, including LeVert, rotate in the fifth spot.
LeVert, who is averaging 10.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game this season, has been a key part of the Cavaliers’ second unit. Niang, averaging 8.7 points and 3.7 rebounds, also leaves Cleveland as part of the deal. Both players were valued for their contributions, but the Cavaliers prioritized addressing their roster needs and maintaining financial flexibility.
The trade not only strengthens Cleveland’s playoff aspirations but also provides Atlanta with additional assets as they look to rebuild. The Hawks, currently ninth in the Eastern Conference with a 23-28 record, gain draft capital and two experienced players in LeVert and Niang.
For the Cavaliers, who hold the top seed in the East with a 41-10 record, the move signals their commitment to making a deep playoff run. Hunter’s ability to score and defend multiple positions aligns with Cleveland’s goal of competing against top-tier teams like Boston and Milwaukee. The Cavaliers will now monitor the buyout market for additional roster reinforcements as they gear up for the postseason.
