Eli Manning Misses Pro Football Hall of Fame in First Year of Eligibility

Eli Manning, the two-time Super Bowl MVP and former New York Giants quarterback, was not elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility for the Class of 2025. The announcement came during the NFL Honors show, where the four-member class included Eric Allen, Jared Allen, Antonio Gates, and Sterling Sharpe. Manning, who retired after the 2019 season, was one of 15 finalists but did not make the final cut after a “vigorous discussion” among voters.

Manning’s career is marked by two iconic Super Bowl victories over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, including the historic upset of the undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. He ranks 11th all-time in passing yards (57,023) and touchdowns (366) and never missed a game due to injury in his 16-year career. However, his case for the Hall of Fame is complicated by his lack of All-Pro selections, MVP awards, and a career record of 117-117. Critics argue that while Manning had “Hall of Fame moments,” his overall career lacked the consistency of other first-ballot inductees.

Hall of Fame voter Gary Myers, who supported Manning, highlighted his two Super Bowl MVPs and clutch performances but acknowledged the challenges of his candidacy, given the era in which he played alongside legends like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Drew Brees. Manning himself expressed no disappointment, stating he is “totally at peace” with the decision and remains hopeful for future induction.

The 2025 class did not include any quarterbacks, and Manning’s path to Canton may face stiffer competition in 2026 when Brees, Philip Rivers, and other notable players become eligible. Historically, several NFL stars, including Michael Strahan and Terrell Owens, had to wait multiple years before being enshrined. Manning’s supporters, including his brother Peyton and former Patriots coach Bill Belichick, remain confident that his time will come, likely sooner rather than later.
