End of an Era; Jets Part Ways with Aaron Rodgers

The New York Jets have informed quarterback Aaron Rodgers that they are moving on from him, marking the end of his two-year tenure with the team. Rodgers, 41, met with new head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey in New Jersey last week, where he was told of the team’s decision. This move comes after a disappointing 2024 season in which the Jets finished 5-12, despite Rodgers starting all 17 games and throwing for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

Rodgers’ time with the Jets began with high expectations following a blockbuster trade with the Green Bay Packers in April 2023. However, his first season was cut short when he suffered a torn Achilles tendon just four plays into the opening game. The 2024 season saw Rodgers return to full health, but the team struggled to find consistency, leading to the firings of head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas midseason.

The Jets now face a significant financial decision. Cutting Rodgers would result in a $49 million dead-money charge, which could be spread over two years if designated as a post-June 1 release. Rodgers has one year remaining on his contract, with a non-guaranteed $37.5 million salary. It remains unclear whether Rodgers will retire or seek to continue his career with another team.

The Jets are expected to pursue a new starting quarterback in the offseason, with Tyrod Taylor currently the only experienced quarterback on the roster. Rodgers’ departure also raises questions about the future of wide receiver Davante Adams, who was reunited with Rodgers in a midseason trade but may not want to remain with the Jets without him.
