FAW Proposes Rule Change to Allow Matt Grimes to Play for Wales

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) is seeking to change eligibility rules to allow former Swansea City midfielder Matt Grimes to represent Wales internationally. Grimes, who was born in Exeter and has represented England at the Under-21 level, spent 10 years with Swansea before moving to Coventry City. Under current rules, players can only represent Wales, England, Scotland, or Northern Ireland if they have five years of continuous education in that country up to the age of 18. The FAW’s proposed rule change would allow players registered with a club in one of the home nations for at least five years to become eligible for that country’s national team. If approved, the 29-year-old Grimes would qualify for Wales and could feature in head coach Craig Bellamy’s plans for the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. The FAW is lobbying other home nations’ football associations to align eligibility rules with FIFA’s current standards. However, the proposal could also create complications, as Welsh-qualified players moving to clubs in other home nations might become eligible for those countries after five years of residency.
