Global PlayStation Network Outage Disrupts Millions of Users
PlayStation Network (PSN) experienced a significant global outage starting Friday evening, February 7, 2025, leaving millions of users unable to access online gaming, the PlayStation Store, and other services. The outage, which lasted over 20 hours, began around 6:30 p.m. EST and affected users worldwide, including in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Sony acknowledged the issue on X (formerly Twitter) at 8:46 p.m. EST, stating it was “aware some users might be currently experiencing issues with PSN,” but provided no further updates or explanations for the disruption.
By Saturday afternoon, some users reported being able to reconnect to the servers, though service remained shaky for many. The PlayStation Network status page continued to indicate issues across all services, including PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and gaming services. Frustration mounted among players, particularly as the outage coincided with a double XP weekend for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and the beta release of the highly anticipated game Monster Hunter Wilds. Popular games like Fortnite, Roblox, and Marvel Rivals were also impacted.
Sony has yet to disclose the cause of the outage, leaving gamers to speculate and vent their frustrations on social media platforms like Reddit and X. This incident echoes the infamous 2011 PSN outage, which lasted nearly 23 days due to a cyberattack and cost Sony $171 million in damages. While the current outage has not been linked to a cyberattack, its duration and lack of communication from Sony have drawn criticism from the gaming community. As of Saturday afternoon, the situation remains unresolved for many users, with no official timeline for a full restoration of services.
