Gulf of Mexico Renamed to Gulf of America by Executive Order

The Gulf of Mexico has officially been renamed the “Gulf of America” in the United States, following an executive order by former President Donald Trump. The change, effective as of February 2025, was implemented by the federal Board on Geographic Names and is now reflected in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). While the new name is being adopted across U.S. government agencies and platforms like Google Maps, other countries, including Mexico, have rejected the change. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo humorously suggested renaming the United States “Mexican America” in response.

Major mapping services, including Google Maps and Apple Maps, have updated their platforms to reflect the new name, though some inconsistencies remain. For example, Google Maps displays “Gulf of America” when zoomed in but reverts to “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)” when zoomed out. Other international mapping platforms, such as Baidu and OpenStreetMap, continue to use the original name. The renaming has sparked debate, with critics questioning its necessity and international implications. The Gulf, which borders multiple countries, including Mexico, Cuba, and the U.S., remains a contested geographic feature in terms of nomenclature.
