House Republican Proposes Bill to Purchase and Rename Greenland

A House Republican has introduced a bill that would authorize President Donald Trump to negotiate the purchase of Greenland from Denmark and rename it “Red, White and Blueland.” Rep. Earl “Buddy” Carter (R-Ga.) unveiled the “Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025” on Tuesday, which seeks to formalize Trump’s long-standing interest in acquiring the autonomous Danish territory. The bill would also mandate that all U.S. government documents and maps refer to Greenland as “Red, White, and Blueland” if the acquisition is successful.

Carter framed the proposal as a national security priority, stating, “America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland.” He praised Trump’s vision, calling the potential acquisition a “monumental deal” that would welcome Greenland’s people into “the freest nation to ever exist.”

However, the proposal has been met with resistance from Danish and Greenlandic officials, who have repeatedly stated that Greenland is not for sale. The bill is unlikely to become law but reflects a broader trend among Republican lawmakers to introduce symbolic legislation aligning with Trump’s policy ideas. This includes other proposals such as renaming the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” and reacquiring the Panama Canal.

The introduction of the bill comes amid broader political tensions, as Greenland’s government has moved to ban foreign political donations ahead of its elections, citing concerns over U.S. interest in the territory. While the proposal has sparked debate, it remains a largely symbolic gesture in a Congress grappling with more pressing domestic policy issues.
