JCPenney has announced the closure of eight stores across eight states by mid-2025, marking another wave of downsizing for the struggling retail giant. The closures, which represent less than 2% of the company’s 650-plus locations, are attributed to factors such as expiring lease agreements, market changes, and other operational considerations. A company spokesperson emphasized that these closures are isolated and not part of a broader plan to significantly reduce the store count.
The affected locations include stores in San Bruno, California; Denver, Colorado; Pocatello, Idaho; Topeka, Kansas; Annapolis, Maryland; Asheville, North Carolina; Newington, New Hampshire; and Charleston, West Virginia. These closures are unrelated to JCPenney’s recent merger with Sparc, a retail store operator, which was finalized in January 2025 under the joint Catalyst Brands label. CEO Marc Rosen expressed optimism about the merger, stating it would allow the companies to leverage resources and industry expertise to grow their brands.
The announcement comes amid a challenging retail landscape, with approximately 15,000 stores expected to close nationwide in 2025, more than double the 7,325 closures in 2024. JCPenney, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020 and closed around 200 stores during its restructuring, has been working to stabilize its operations. Despite these efforts, industry analysts note that the company continues to face significant headwinds in adapting to shifting consumer habits and the rise of e-commerce.
