JCPenney is set to close a “handful” of stores across eight states by mid-2025, citing expiring lease agreements and market changes as the primary reasons. The closures are unrelated to the company’s recent merger with SPARC Group, which formed Catalyst Brands, a new organization combining six major retail banners.

The affected locations include stores in California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Maryland, North Carolina, New Hampshire, and West Virginia. Specific addresses include The Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno, California; The Shops at Northfield in Denver, Colorado; Pine Ridge Mall in Pocatello, Idaho; West Ridge Mall in Topeka, Kansas; Annapolis Mall in Annapolis, Maryland; Asheville Mall in Asheville, North Carolina; Mall at Fox Run in Newington, New Hampshire; and Charleston Town Center in Charleston, West Virginia.

JCPenney emphasized that these closures are isolated and do not reflect a broader reduction in its store count. The company continues to focus on serving working families and has invested over $1 billion in recent years to revamp its product offerings and store portfolio. Despite challenges, including a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing during the COVID-19 pandemic, JCPenney has worked to stabilize its operations and position itself as a budget-friendly alternative in the retail sector.
