Jimmy Johnson Reflects on Dallas Cowboys' Missed Three-Peat Opportunity
Legendary NFL coach Jimmy Johnson reflected on the Dallas Cowboys’ missed opportunity to achieve a historic three-peat during a media event in New Orleans ahead of Super Bowl LIX. Johnson, who led the Cowboys to back-to-back Super Bowl victories in 1993 and 1994, suggested that the team could have potentially secured a third consecutive championship if not for his infamous feud with owner Jerry Jones. The rift between the two led to Johnson’s departure in March 1994, just months after their second Super Bowl win.
Johnson acknowledged the difficulty of speculating on what might have been but emphasized the talent and youth of his Cowboys roster. “We had the youngest team in the NFL,” Johnson said. “A young team like that is only going to get better.” He also noted his ability to acquire talent, suggesting he would have added more players to strengthen the team further.
After Johnson’s departure, Barry Switzer took over as head coach, and the Cowboys reached the NFC Championship Game in 1995 but fell to the San Francisco 49ers. They later won another Super Bowl in 1996, marking three championships in four years. However, the chance for a three-peat remains a tantalizing “what if” in NFL history.
Johnson’s comments come as the Kansas City Chiefs aim to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls, a feat that could have been achieved by the Cowboys had circumstances been different.
