Josh Allen Clinches 2024 NFL MVP in Historic Close Race
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has been named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player for the 2024 season, edging out Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson in one of the closest MVP races in league history. The announcement was made at the NFL Honors show, where Allen received 27 first-place votes and 383 total points, narrowly surpassing Jackson, who garnered 23 first-place votes and 362 points. This marks Allen’s first MVP award, making him the third Bills player to achieve the honor, joining Thurman Thomas (1991) and O.J. Simpson (1973).
The MVP race was notable for its competitiveness, as Jackson had been named the first-team All-Pro quarterback by the same 50 voters who select the MVP. This marked the first time since 1987 that the MVP and first-team All-Pro quarterback were different players. Allen’s victory was seen as a reversal of a long-standing voting trend, as Jackson had statistically superior numbers, including 4,172 passing yards, 41 touchdowns, and a 119.6 passer rating, compared to Allen’s 3,731 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and a 101.4 passer rating. However, Allen’s ability to elevate a less-talented supporting cast and his dual-threat capabilities—adding 531 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns—appeared to sway voters.
Allen’s MVP campaign gained momentum after a standout performance in Week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams, where he became the first player in NFL history to record three passing and three rushing touchdowns in a single game. Despite the Bills’ 44-42 loss, the performance solidified his status as the favorite for the award. While Allen acknowledged Jackson’s deserving candidacy, he expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the support of his teammates.
The MVP win adds to Allen’s growing legacy, though his career remains incomplete without a Super Bowl appearance. With the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes dominating the AFC, Allen and the Bills face continued challenges in their quest for a championship. Nevertheless, Allen’s MVP season cements his status as one of the league’s elite quarterbacks, capable of carrying his team with both his arm and his legs.
