A kayaker in Chile experienced a terrifying encounter when a humpback whale briefly swallowed him before releasing him unharmed. The incident, which occurred on February 8, 2025, near the San Isidro Lighthouse in the Strait of Magellan, was captured on video and quickly went viral.
Adrián Simancas was kayaking with his father, Dell, when the whale surfaced directly beneath him, scooping him and his yellow kayak into its mouth. Moments later, the whale resurfaced and released Simancas, who described the experience as harrowing. “I thought I was dead,” he told the Associated Press. “I thought it had eaten me, that it had swallowed me.”
Dell Simancas, who filmed the incident, can be heard urging his son to remain calm. After being released, Adrián expressed concern for his father’s safety and feared they might not reach shore in time or that he would suffer from hypothermia in the frigid waters. Fortunately, both father and son returned to shore unharmed.
Whale attacks on humans are rare in Chilean waters, but the Strait of Magellan, known for its adventurous activities, poses challenges due to its cold temperatures. The incident highlights the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters in the region.
