Lakers Rescind Trade for Mark Williams After Failed Physical

The Los Angeles Lakers have rescinded their trade for Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams after he failed his physical examination, according to multiple reports. The deal, which was initially agreed upon on February 8, 2025, would have sent Williams to the Lakers in exchange for rookie wing Dalton Knecht, forward Cam Reddish, a 2030 first-round pick swap, and an unprotected 2031 first-round pick. However, the Lakers cited “multiple issues” discovered during Williams’ physical as the reason for voiding the trade. Notably, the concerns did not involve his back, which had previously sidelined him for much of his sophomore season.

With the NBA trade deadline having passed, the Lakers were unable to amend the deal and were left with no choice but to rescind it entirely. As a result, Williams will return to the Hornets, while Knecht, Reddish, and the draft assets will revert to the Lakers. The Hornets expressed enthusiasm about Williams’ return, stating that his talent and work ethic would strengthen their roster.

The failed trade leaves the Lakers thin at the center position for the remainder of the season. Jaxson Hayes is expected to remain the starting center, with two-way players Christian Koloko and Trey Jemison III providing depth. The Lakers may explore the buyout market for additional help, though options are limited. Meanwhile, the team retains Knecht, a promising young player, and their future draft assets, which could be used to address their center needs in the offseason.

This marks the first time an NBA trade has been rescinded since 2022, when the Detroit Pistons voided a deal with the Denver Nuggets due to concerns about a player’s physical. The Lakers’ decision underscores the risks of last-minute trades and the importance of thorough medical evaluations.
