Lakers Sign Veteran Center Alex Len to Strengthen Frontcourt

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed veteran center Alex Len to bolster their frontcourt, the team announced on Tuesday. Len, a 7-foot, 250-pound center, will join the Lakers for the remainder of the season after being waived by the Washington Wizards following a three-team trade that initially sent him from the Sacramento Kings. The move comes after the Lakers’ failed attempt to acquire Mark Williams, whose trade was rescinded due to a failed physical.

Len, 31, has played 36 games this season, averaging 1.4 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.5 blocks in limited minutes. A former lottery pick by the Phoenix Suns, Len has spent the majority of his 680-game NBA career as a backup, averaging 6.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks. His addition provides size and depth behind starting center Jaxson Hayes, the only other true center on the Lakers’ roster.

To make room for Len, the Lakers waived veteran big man Christian Wood, who has been sidelined since last February due to a left knee injury. Wood, who underwent multiple knee procedures, has not played since the All-Star break last year. The Lakers, who are also utilizing small-ball lineups, have Christian Koloko and Trey Jemison III on two-way contracts, though these players are ineligible for postseason play.

The Lakers face the Utah Jazz on Wednesday before the All-Star break, as they continue to adjust their roster in pursuit of a playoff push.
