Lakers Trade for Mark Williams to Pair with Luka Doncic
The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired center Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets in a trade that sends rookie Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, a 2031 unprotected first-round pick, and a 2030 pick swap to Charlotte. The move, reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, addresses the Lakers’ need for a young, athletic center to pair with newly acquired superstar Luka Doncic.
Williams, 23, is in the midst of a breakout season, averaging 16.0 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game in 22 appearances. The 7-foot-2 center, drafted 15th overall in 2022, has shown significant potential as a lob threat and rim protector, making him an ideal fit alongside Doncic, who thrives with vertical big men. However, Williams has struggled with injuries in his career, playing just 19 games last season due to back issues and 43 games in his rookie year.
For the Hornets, the trade nets them Knecht, the 17th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, who has averaged 9.4 points on 47% shooting in his rookie season. Charlotte also receives valuable draft assets, including the 2031 first-round pick and a 2030 pick swap, as they continue their rebuild. Knecht joins a young core led by LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller.
The Lakers, who recently traded Anthony Davis for Doncic, are clearly in win-now mode. Williams, who is extension-eligible this offseason, provides a long-term solution at center while complementing Doncic’s playmaking. Despite the steep cost, including Knecht and future draft capital, the Lakers are betting on Williams’ upside and health to solidify their roster for a championship push.
