Major 7.6-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Caribbean Sea, Triggers Tsunami Warnings
A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean Sea on Saturday evening, prompting tsunami warnings for several nearby regions, including Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Cayman Islands. The earthquake, which occurred at approximately 6:23 p.m. local time, had its epicenter about 20 miles north of Honduras and 130 miles southwest of the Cayman Islands, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Initial warnings from the U.S. Tsunami Warning System predicted waves of up to three meters (10 feet), but these alerts were later canceled as the threat subsided.
The Cayman Islands government advised residents in coastal areas to move inland as a precaution, though no significant damage or injuries have been reported. The USGS noted that the earthquake resulted from strike-slip faulting near the boundary between the North American and Caribbean plates, a region prone to seismic activity. Authorities confirmed that while minor sea level fluctuations of up to 30 centimeters (11.8 inches) could still occur, the tsunami threat had largely passed.
This earthquake is the largest to hit the region since a 7.2-magnitude quake struck Haiti in 2021. The USGS emphasized that the remote location of the earthquake limited the potential for significant damage from shaking. No tsunami alerts were issued for the mainland U.S. coast.
