Major Recall of Doughnut and Pastry Products Due to Listeria Risk

Approximately 2 million doughnut and pastry products have been recalled due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations. The recall, initiated by FGF Brands on January 7 and upgraded to a Class II recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on February 5, affects products distributed across the United States and Canada. Among the recalled items are several Dunkin’ products, including Munchkins, apple fritters, French crullers, paczki pastries, cake rings, and cinnamon sticks.

The FDA defines a Class II recall as a situation where exposure to the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, with the probability of serious health risks being remote. FGF Brands stated that the voluntary recall was completed over a month ago and assured consumers that all currently available products are safe to eat. However, the recall impacts products produced on or before December 13, 2024, totaling 2,017,614 cases.

Listeria monocytogenes poses significant risks to pregnant women, newborns, adults aged 65 and older, and individuals with weakened immune systems. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeria is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the U.S., with approximately 1,600 infections and 260 deaths annually. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, vomiting, and, in severe cases, headache, stiff neck, confusion, and convulsions. Pregnant individuals face additional risks, including pregnancy loss and life-threatening infections for newborns.

This recall follows a series of food safety incidents, including a significant listeria-related recall of deli meats in 2024 that resulted in multiple deaths and hospitalizations. Consumers are advised to check the FDA’s website for a full list of recalled products and to discard any affected items.
