Massive Recall of Doughnut and Pastry Products Due to Listeria Risk
Approximately 2 million doughnut and pastry products have been recalled due to potential listeria contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The recall, initiated on January 7, 2025, and upgraded to a Class II recall on February 5, affects products manufactured by FGF Brands, an Indiana-based pastry wholesaler. The recalled items include a variety of doughnut products such as cake rings, fritters, paczki, eclairs, and Munchkins, which were distributed across the U.S. and Canada. Several of the affected products are typically sold under the Dunkin’ brand and other private-label grocery store brands.
The FDA defines a Class II recall as a situation where exposure to the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, with the probability of serious health risks being remote. Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria in question, can cause listeriosis, a serious infection particularly dangerous for pregnant individuals, newborns, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and, in severe cases, headaches, stiff neck, confusion, and convulsions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that listeria causes about 1,600 infections and 260 deaths annually in the U.S.
FGF Brands stated that the voluntary recall was completed over a month ago and assured that all currently available products are safe to consume. However, the FDA has not yet terminated the recall, indicating that its review process remains ongoing. Consumers are advised to check product expiration dates and avoid consuming any recalled items. Retailers have been instructed to remove affected products from shelves, and consumers may be eligible for refunds or replacements through their grocery store’s recall policy.
This recall highlights broader concerns about food safety and the challenges consumers face in tracking private-label product recalls, as many affected items are sold under various brand names without clear identification of the manufacturer.
