Nationwide Recall of Canned Tuna Due to Botulism Risk

A nationwide recall of canned tuna products has been issued due to a manufacturing defect that poses a risk of botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. The recall, initiated by Tri-Union Seafoods on February 7, 2025, affects products sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brand names. These products were distributed to major retailers, including Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Costco, and H-E-B, across multiple states.

The recall was prompted by a defect in the “easy open” pull tab lids on certain cans, which could compromise the product’s seal over time. This defect may lead to leakage or contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that can cause botulism. Symptoms of botulism include difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and, in severe cases, death. No illnesses have been reported to date, but consumers are advised not to use the affected products, even if they appear or smell normal.

The recalled products were sold in various states, including Texas, Florida, Georgia, and Pennsylvania, among others. Specific can codes and “Best If Used By” dates are listed in the recall notice. Consumers are urged to return the products to the retailer for a full refund, dispose of them, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for retrieval kits and replacement coupons.

Tri-Union Seafoods emphasized that the recall was issued “out of an abundance of caution” and does not affect any other products from the company. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are monitoring the situation, and consumers experiencing symptoms after consuming the recalled tuna should seek immediate medical attention.
