Portland Braces for Final Winter Weather with Freezing Rain and Snow

Portland experienced a final round of winter weather Friday, with freezing rain transitioning to snow overnight and into the morning. The Portland metro area saw a mix of freezing rain and snow, with some areas near Salem reporting light ice accumulation. KGW meteorologists noted that solid snowfall was expected to continue through the morning commute, with precipitation tapering off by 10 a.m. Temperatures were forecast to rise slightly above freezing, aiding in the melting of snow and ice on roadways.

Drivers were advised to exercise caution Friday morning, particularly in higher elevations, where icy conditions persisted. Up to 0.25 inches of ice accumulation was reported in parts of the Willamette Valley, with one to two inches of new snow expected in some areas. By Friday afternoon, temperatures were predicted to climb above freezing, starting in the southern metro area and moving northward. However, road conditions remained uncertain, as the thawing process depended on the timing of the warmup and the amount of accumulated snow and ice.

Looking ahead, a warmer weather system is expected to bring rain to the region Saturday afternoon, with temperatures rising to around 40 degrees. This system is anticipated to melt and wash away any remaining snow and ice. Rain is expected to continue through Sunday and Monday, with temperatures staying in the 40s both day and night. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather conditions as the region transitions from winter weather to milder temperatures.
