Proposal to Rename Greenland to 'Red, White, and Blueland' Sparks Controversy

A Republican congressman has proposed renaming Greenland to “Red, White, and Blueland” as part of a broader effort to acquire the autonomous Danish territory. Representative Buddy Carter of Georgia introduced the “Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025,” which would authorize President Donald Trump to negotiate the purchase of Greenland and mandate the name change. Carter framed the acquisition as a national security priority, citing Greenland’s strategic importance due to its natural resources, military significance, and role in global trade.

The bill, if passed, would require the U.S. Department of the Interior to update all federal documents and maps to reflect the new name within six months. Carter stated, “America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland,” emphasizing the administration’s commitment to expanding U.S. influence.

However, the proposal faces significant opposition. Both Danish and Greenlandic officials have repeatedly stated that Greenland is not for sale. A recent poll revealed that 85% of Greenlanders oppose joining the U.S., with only 6% in favor. Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede reiterated that the territory’s future will be decided by its people, not external powers.

In a satirical response, Danish citizens launched a “Denmarkification” campaign to crowdfund $1 trillion to buy California from the U.S., renaming it “New Denmark” and rebranding Disneyland as “Hans Christian Andersenland.” The campaign has garnered nearly 200,000 signatures, highlighting the absurdity of the Greenland proposal.

The idea of acquiring Greenland first emerged during Trump’s presidency in 2019 and resurfaced with renewed vigor in 2025. While the U.S. views Greenland as a strategic asset, the proposal has been met with skepticism and resistance from both Denmark and Greenland, underscoring the complexities of such a geopolitical move.
