Series of Minor Earthquakes Shake East Bay Near Hayward
A series of small earthquakes rattled the East Bay near Hayward on Thursday, with magnitudes ranging from 2.7 to 3.7, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The tremors were centered near the Hayward Fault and were felt by over 2,200 people, including residents as far away as San Francisco and the Santa Cruz Mountains. No damage or injuries have been reported.
The first quake, a magnitude 2.7, struck around 5:03 a.m. about a mile and a quarter east of Hayward. This was followed by two more tremors late Thursday morning: a magnitude 3.4 quake at 11:52 a.m. and a magnitude 3.2 quake just two minutes later. The strongest quake of the day, a magnitude 3.7, occurred just before 2 p.m. in the same area. Later in the afternoon, a magnitude 2.5 quake struck about three miles west of Pleasant Hill.
The USGS confirmed that the earthquakes were relatively shallow, with depths of just under four miles. While the tremors were widely felt, they are considered minor and typically do not cause significant damage. Residents took to social media to share their experiences, with some noting the unusual frequency of the quakes in such a short span of time. The Hayward Fault, where the quakes occurred, is one of the most active fault lines in the Bay Area.
