SpaceX Delays Starship Flight 8, Launches Starlink Satellites, and Secures NASA's Pandora Mission
SpaceX has delayed the eighth test flight of its Starship megarocket to March 3, 2025, pushing back the launch from its original target of February 28. The Starship Flight 8 mission will lift off from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in South Texas during a window opening at 6:30 p.m. EST. The mission aims to test the Super Heavy booster and the upper stage, Ship, which will attempt to deploy mock Starlink satellites and target a controlled splashdown off Western Australia. This follows the partially successful Flight 7, where SpaceX caught the Super Heavy booster but lost the upper stage due to a propellant leak.
In a separate launch, SpaceX successfully deployed 23 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit using a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base on February 10, 2025. The launch, visible from Bakersfield, California, marked the 23rd mission for the first-stage booster, which landed on the droneship “Of Course I Still Love You” in the Pacific Ocean.
Additionally, NASA has selected SpaceX to launch the Pandora smallsat mission, an astrophysics project designed to study exoplanet atmospheres. The mission, part of NASA’s Astrophysics Pioneers program, is scheduled for a rideshare launch as early as September 2025. Pandora will observe 20 stars with exoplanets to analyze atmospheric compositions and address challenges related to stellar variability. The spacecraft, weighing up to 320 kilograms, will operate in a sun-synchronous orbit, likely launching on SpaceX’s Transporter series.
