Stephen Curry Reacts to Warriors' Trade for Jimmy Butler
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry shared his initial reaction to the team’s blockbuster trade for Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler, who joined the Warriors ahead of the NBA trade deadline. Despite earlier reports suggesting Butler would not sign an extension with Golden State, the deal was finalized, and Butler agreed to a two-year, $121 million contract, making him one of the highest-paid players on the roster.
Curry, the Warriors’ franchise cornerstone, revealed that he texted Butler to welcome him to the team, receiving a “pleasant” response in return. Addressing the drama surrounding Butler’s departure from Miami, Curry acknowledged the uncertainty but expressed optimism about Butler’s impact. “I understand there was a lot of drama down there,” Curry said. “Who really knows what the story is? We expect to have a motivated, committed Jimmy that’s ready to impact our team for the better.”
The Warriors, currently 11th in the Western Conference with a 25-25 record, are hoping Butler’s arrival can reignite their championship aspirations. Curry emphasized the need to integrate Butler into the team’s system while maintaining their identity. “It’ll look different than what we’re used to,” Curry said. “He’s a shot creator, a finisher, somebody that you have to take into account no matter where he’s on the floor.”
Despite concerns about Butler’s fit in the locker room, particularly given his history of contentious exits from previous teams, the Warriors moved forward with the trade. Reports indicated that both Curry and head coach Steve Kerr had reservations about Butler’s personality and how it might mesh with the team’s culture. However, with limited options available, the Warriors ultimately decided to take the risk, aiming to bolster their roster for a playoff push.
