Super Bowl History; The Challenge of a Shutout

In the history of the Super Bowl, no team has ever been completely shut out, meaning no team has ever failed to score a single point in the championship game. The lowest score recorded by a team in the Super Bowl is three points, which has happened twice. The Miami Dolphins scored only a field goal in a 24-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl VI (1972), and the Los Angeles Rams managed just three points in a 13-3 defeat against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LIII (2019).

The closest any team came to a shutout was in Super Bowl XLVIII (2014), when the Seattle Seahawks led the Denver Broncos 36-0 before the Broncos scored a touchdown late in the third quarter, avoiding the first-ever shutout in Super Bowl history. Despite numerous lopsided games over the years, the Super Bowl has yet to see a team held scoreless.
