Tragic Bering Air Crash in Alaska Claims 10 Lives
A Bering Air Cessna Caravan carrying 10 people crashed in Alaska on Thursday, February 7, 2025, with no survivors expected, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The plane, which departed Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m. local time, was en route to Nome, approximately 140 miles away, when it lost contact around 3:18 p.m. Radar data indicated the aircraft experienced a sudden loss of altitude and speed before disappearing. The wreckage was discovered Friday approximately 34 miles southeast of Nome, with three bodies recovered from the forward section of the plane. The remaining seven individuals are believed to be inside the aircraft, which was deemed inaccessible due to severe damage.
The Coast Guard, along with the Nome Volunteer Fire Department, Alaska National Guard, and FBI, conducted extensive search and rescue operations. The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Weather conditions at the time included light snow, freezing drizzle, and mist, though the Nome Airport runway remained open and de-icing operations were reportedly conducted.
Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy expressed his condolences, stating, “Our prayers are with the families, friends, and communities mourning this tragedy.” The crash has deeply affected the region, as Nome and Unalakleet rely heavily on air travel due to the lack of road access. Bering Air, a regional carrier serving remote Alaskan communities, operates passenger and cargo flights to 32 locations across the state.
This incident adds to recent concerns about U.S. air safety, following two other deadly aviation accidents in late January 2025. The identities of the victims have not been released, but their families have been notified.
