Tragic Crash of Bering Air Cessna 208B Grand Caravan Near Nome, Alaska

The wreckage of a Bering Air Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, which went missing on Thursday afternoon, was found on sea ice approximately 34 miles southeast of Nome, Alaska, on Friday. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that all 10 people aboard—nine passengers and one pilot—died in the crash. The plane, which had been traveling from Unalakleet to Nome, lost radio contact about 38 minutes after takeoff and was last detected on radar at 3:16 p.m. local time, experiencing a rapid loss of altitude and speed.

Search and rescue efforts, involving the Coast Guard, National Guard, U.S. Air Force, and local volunteers, were hampered by harsh weather conditions, including snow, freezing drizzle, and limited visibility. Two Coast Guard swimmers were lowered to the wreckage by helicopter, where they confirmed the deaths of three individuals inside the plane. The remaining seven are believed to have perished in the crash, though the aircraft’s condition made it inaccessible for further recovery efforts.

Bering Air, a regional carrier serving remote Alaskan communities, operates flights to 32 villages in the state. The crash highlights the reliance on air travel in Alaska, where over 80% of communities are inaccessible by road. The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the incident.

This tragedy comes amid heightened scrutiny of U.S. air safety following two other deadly aviation incidents in recent weeks. Authorities have not yet released the identities of those on board, but their families have been notified. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy expressed his condolences, calling the loss “heartbreaking” for the state.
