Tri-Union Seafoods Recalls Canned Tuna Over Botulism Risk

Tri-Union Seafoods has issued a voluntary recall for select canned tuna products sold under brands including Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s due to a manufacturing defect that poses a risk of botulism contamination. The recall, announced on February 7, 2025, affects products distributed nationwide at retailers such as Costco, Walmart, and Trader Joe’s. The defect involves the “easy open” pull tab lids, which may compromise the product’s seal, potentially allowing contamination by Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause severe food poisoning.

The recalled products were sold in various states, including Florida and Georgia at Costco, and across multiple retailers in states like Alabama, California, Texas, and Pennsylvania. Specific can codes and “Best if Used By” dates have been provided to help consumers identify affected products. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall, but consumers are urged not to consume the recalled tuna, even if it appears or smells normal.

Consumers are advised to return the products to the retailer for a full refund, dispose of them, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product. The company can be reached at 833-374-0171 or via email at support@thaiunionhelp.zendesk.com. The recall does not impact other Tri-Union Seafoods products, and the company emphasizes its commitment to safety and quality standards.
