Trump Enlists Elon Musk to Uncover Government Waste in Education and Pentagon
President Donald Trump has directed Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), to investigate potential wasteful spending in the U.S. Department of Education and the Pentagon. In an exclusive pre-Super Bowl interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Trump expressed confidence that Musk would uncover “hundreds of billions of dollars” in fraud and abuse within these agencies. Trump praised Musk as a trustworthy ally in his administration’s efforts to cut government waste, stating, “He’s not gaining anything. In fact, I wonder how he can devote the time to it.”
The DOGE, established under Trump’s administration, has already identified over $1 billion in savings by canceling federal contracts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. Trump emphasized that the American people elected him to address such inefficiencies, saying, “The people want me to find it [the wasteful spending], and I’ve had great help with Elon Musk, who’s been terrific.”
The announcement has sparked controversy, with some Democrats opposing the administration’s efforts to reduce federal spending. Last week, a group of protesters attempted to enter the Department of Education building in Washington, D.C., to voice their concerns over potential cuts. Trump reiterated his belief that states are better equipped to handle education, suggesting that the federal Department of Education could eventually be phased out.
The interview, which aired hours before Super Bowl LIX, also touched on Trump’s broader goals for government efficiency and his administration’s achievements in its first 100 days. Additional portions of the interview were set to air on Fox News’ “Special Report with Bret Baier.”
