Two Commercial Planes Collide at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
Two commercial planes collided on the ground at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) on Wednesday morning, causing damage but no injuries. The incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. local time when a Japan Airlines plane, while taxiing, struck the tail of a parked Delta Air Lines aircraft. The collision took place on a ramp between the S Concourse and the south airport maintenance hangars.
Airport officials confirmed that all passengers from both flights were safely deplaned and brought to the terminal. “There are no injuries reported at this time,” SEA stated, adding that the incident had “minimal impact” on airport operations. Passengers were rebooked on alternative flights, and the damaged aircraft were moved off the taxiway.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched investigations into the cause of the collision. Witnesses described the moment as “scary” and “shocking,” with one passenger noting the loud impact and visible damage to the Delta plane’s tail. Social media posts showed the Japan Airlines wing slicing through the tail of the Delta aircraft.
This incident follows a series of recent aviation accidents, including a midair collision near Washington, D.C., last week that killed 67 people. Authorities are examining potential factors such as pilot error, miscommunication with air traffic control, or airport congestion. Travelers are advised to check with their airlines for potential delays as safety reviews continue.
