UConn Women's Basketball Loses to Tennessee in a Close Game

The No. 5 UConn women’s basketball team suffered an 80-76 loss to No. 19 Tennessee on Thursday night in Knoxville, snapping their four-game winning streak in the series. The Huskies struggled with their shooting, going 5-20 from three-point range and 19-35 on layups, while also faltering in critical moments down the stretch. Despite a late rally to tie the game at 74-74 with 2:07 remaining, Tennessee outscored UConn 6-2 in the final minutes to secure the upset victory.

Paige Bueckers led the Huskies with 14 points and eight assists, though she shot just 5-14 from the field. Freshman Sarah Strong added 18 points but committed five turnovers, including a costly foul late in the game that reset the shot clock and allowed Tennessee to extend their lead. The loss drops UConn to 21-3 on the season, with their next game set for Sunday against Providence in Big East play.

The matchup marked the first UConn-Tennessee game under new Lady Vols head coach Kim Caldwell, whose up-tempo, pressing style has revitalized the program. While the rivalry lacks the intensity of its heyday under Geno Auriemma and Pat Summitt, the game still holds significance as both programs remain among the most storied in women’s college basketball. UConn, which has dominated the series since its revival in 2020, now looks to regroup ahead of a highly anticipated showdown with No. 2 South Carolina on Feb. 16, where ESPN College GameDay will be in attendance.
