USS Harry S. Truman Collides with Merchant Vessel Near Egypt

The USS Harry S. Truman, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, collided with the merchant vessel Besiktas-M near Port Said, Egypt, in the Mediterranean Sea on February 12, 2025, at approximately 11:46 p.m. local time. The incident occurred as the carrier was awaiting entry into the Suez Canal to transit back into the Red Sea. According to the U.S. Navy’s Sixth Fleet, there were no reported injuries or flooding aboard the Truman, which carries a crew of 5,000 sailors. The collision caused exterior damage to the carrier above the waterline, but its propulsion systems, powered by two nuclear reactors, remained unaffected and in a “safe and stable condition.”

The Besiktas-M, a 53,000-ton Panamanian-flagged cargo ship, sustained minor damage but was able to continue under its own propulsion. No injuries were reported among its crew. The collision is under investigation, and it remains unclear which vessel was at fault or how the incident will impact the Truman’s operations. The carrier had been operating in the Red Sea since mid-December as part of a mission to counter Houthi militant attacks on commercial vessels in the region. It had recently arrived at a naval base in Crete for a brief break before the collision occurred. The Truman’s strike group had been conducting combat operations in the U.S. Central Command’s area of responsibility, including parts of the Middle East, prior to the incident.
