USS Harry S. Truman Collides with Merchant Vessel Near Port Said

The USS Harry S. Truman, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, was involved in a collision with the merchant vessel Besiktas-M near Port Said, Egypt, in the Mediterranean Sea on February 12, 2025. The incident occurred at approximately 11:46 p.m. local time while the carrier was operating in the vicinity of Port Said, awaiting entry into the Suez Canal to transit back into the Red Sea.

According to the U.S. Navy’s Sixth Fleet, there were no reports of injuries or flooding aboard the Truman, and the ship’s propulsion systems remained unaffected and in a safe condition. The merchant vessel Besiktas-M, a Panamanian-flagged cargo ship, also reported no injuries among its crew, though it sustained some damage. The collision is currently under investigation, with details about the circumstances leading to the incident still unclear.

The USS Harry S. Truman, based in Norfolk, Virginia, had been deployed to the Mediterranean and the Middle East since September 2024. It had recently completed a port call in Souda Bay, Greece, and was part of ongoing operations to deter Houthi militant attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. The carrier’s strike group had been active in the region since mid-December, though operations had slowed following a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in mid-January.

The collision marks a rare incident involving two large vessels, with the 100,000-ton aircraft carrier striking the 53,000-ton merchant ship. The damage to the Truman is reported to be above the waterline, and its operational impact remains uncertain. The Navy emphasized that the ship’s mission capabilities, including maritime security and crisis response, remain intact.
