Winter Storm Disrupts Portland Metro Area with Snow and Ice
A winter storm has hit the Portland metro area, bringing snow, freezing rain, and icy conditions that have disrupted daily life. The storm, which began on Thursday, February 13, 2025, has led to road closures, power outages, and flight cancellations, with authorities urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the Portland area, predicting 1-3 inches of snow and ice accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch, accompanied by wind gusts as high as 45 mph. Freezing rain began Thursday evening, transitioning to snow overnight and continuing into Friday morning. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by late Friday morning, improving road conditions as the precipitation turns to rain.
The storm has caused significant disruptions, including the closure of Northeast 238th Drive in Multnomah County due to multiple crashes involving over 20 vehicles. Interstate 84 west of Multnomah Falls was also shut down. Thousands of homes and businesses lost power, and 17 flights were canceled at Portland International Airport, with 39 others delayed. Public transportation faced delays, with some MAX lines disrupted and buses operating with chains.
Multnomah County has opened six severe weather shelters, with two additional shelters available overnight. The Oregon State Capitol closed, and legislative meetings were canceled. Schools across the region were also closed due to hazardous conditions.
Meteorologists expect the winter weather to taper off by Friday afternoon, with temperatures climbing into the high 30s or low 40s. However, another round of precipitation is forecast for Saturday, though it will bring warmer temperatures and rain, helping to melt remaining snow and ice.
Residents are advised to stay off the roads if possible and prepare for continued icy conditions Friday morning. The Portland Winter Light Festival and other events remain on schedule, but updates will be posted if conditions change.
