YouTube TV and Paramount Global Reach Short-Term Extension Amid Contract Dispute
YouTube TV and Paramount Global have reached a short-term extension to keep Paramount-owned channels, including CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, and Nickelodeon, available on the streaming service after a contract dispute threatened to black out the networks. The disagreement, which centered on carriage fees—payments made by YouTube TV to Paramount for broadcasting rights—had raised concerns among subscribers about losing access to popular channels and DVR recordings of Paramount content.
Paramount accused YouTube TV of pressuring it into accepting “one-sided terms” and “non-market demands,” while YouTube TV stated it aimed to reach a fair agreement without passing additional costs to subscribers. If the channels had gone dark, YouTube TV planned to offer subscribers an $8 credit and suggested they sign up for Paramount+ to continue accessing CBS and related content.
The dispute follows a recent $10 monthly price hike for YouTube TV’s basic package, bringing the cost to $82.99. Both companies expressed hope for a long-term resolution, with Paramount emphasizing its history of successful renewals with major distributors. YouTube TV, which boasts over 8 million subscribers, remains in active negotiations with Paramount to maintain its channels on the platform.
