2025 Bafta Film Awards; Conclave and The Brutalist Lead with Four Wins Each
The 2025 Bafta Film Awards, held at London’s Royal Festival Hall and hosted by David Tennant, saw Pope drama Conclave and immigration epic The Brutalist emerge as the night’s biggest winners, each taking home four awards. Conclave, directed by Edward Berger, won Best Film and Best British Film, marking the first time a movie has claimed both top prizes since 1917. The film also secured Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing. Meanwhile, The Brutalist, directed by Brady Corbet, earned Best Director for Corbet and Best Actor for Adrien Brody, who portrayed Hungarian architect László Tóth. The film also won Best Original Score and Best Cinematography.
Mikey Madison delivered a surprise win for Best Actress for her role in Anora, a film about a New York stripper entangled with a Russian oligarch’s son. Madison, who admitted she hadn’t prepared a speech, used her moment to honor the sex worker community, stating, “I see you, you deserve respect and human decency.” Zoe Saldaña continued her awards season dominance, winning Best Supporting Actress for Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-language musical. Kieran Culkin took home Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain, which also won Best Original Screenplay.
Other notable wins included Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, which claimed Best Animated Film and Best Children and Family Film, and Dune: Part Two, which won for Special Visual Effects and Sound. Warwick Davis was honored with the Bafta Fellowship, the British Academy’s highest accolade, and delivered a heartfelt speech thanking his late wife and mother.
The ceremony, marked by its unpredictable awards season trajectory, saw no single film dominate, with several movies sharing the spotlight. The event also highlighted the international appeal of British cinema, with Berger expressing his gratitude for the warm reception of Conclave in the UK. As the awards season heads toward the Oscars, the Bafta results may influence final voting, particularly for contenders like Madison, Brody, and Saldaña.
