2025 BAFTA Film Awards Highlights; *Conclave* and *The Brutalist* Lead with Four Wins Each

At the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards, held at London’s Royal Festival Hall, Edward Berger’s Conclave and Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist emerged as the night’s biggest winners, each securing four awards. Conclave, a Vatican-set thriller starring Ralph Fiennes as a cardinal overseeing the election of a new pope, claimed the top prize for Best Film, alongside Outstanding British Film, Adapted Screenplay, and Editing. Berger dedicated his win to producer Tessa Ross, calling her “the best producer I know,” and reflected on the film’s themes of democracy and faith, quoting Leonard Cohen: “There’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”

The Brutalist, a sweeping drama about a Hungarian architect in post-war America, earned Brady Corbet the Best Director award, while Adrien Brody took home Best Actor for his portrayal of the titular architect. Brody thanked the British public for their support and paid tribute to his partner, Georgina Chapman, calling her an “angel.” The film also won for Cinematography and Original Score.

In a surprising turn, Mikey Madison won Best Actress for her role in Sean Baker’s Anora, a Palme d’Or-winning drama about a sex worker entangled with a Russian oligarch’s son. Madison dedicated her win to the “sex worker community,” urging respect and decency. Meanwhile, Zoe Saldana won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, a musical about a Mexican cartel leader transitioning genders. Despite controversy surrounding co-star Karla Sofía Gascón’s resurfaced offensive tweets, Audiard extended an olive branch to Gascón in his acceptance speech for Best Film Not in the English Language, saying, “I also thank you, Karla Sofía, who I kiss.”

Other notable wins included Kieran Culkin’s Best Supporting Actor award for A Real Pain, which he accepted in absentia due to a family illness, and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, which won Best Animated Film and the inaugural Children’s & Family Film award. Warwick Davis received the BAFTA Fellowship, delivering an emotional tribute to his late wife, Sammy.

The ceremony, hosted by David Tennant, featured musical performances and light-hearted political jabs, setting the stage for the upcoming Oscars. With no single film dominating, the awards reflected a diverse range of talent and storytelling, underscoring the British Academy’s commitment to inclusivity and innovation in filmmaking.
