78th British Academy Film Awards Highlights and Winners

The 78th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) took place on February 16, 2025, in London, with Conclave and The Brutalist emerging as the night’s biggest winners, each securing four awards. The ceremony, hosted by David Tennant, was marked by a gothic-themed red carpet and a series of surprises, including Mikey Madison’s win for Best Actress for her role in Anora.

Conclave, directed by Edward Berger, claimed the prestigious Best Film award, alongside Outstanding British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. Meanwhile, The Brutalist, directed by Brady Corbet, triumphed in categories including Best Director for Corbet, Best Leading Actor for Adrien Brody, and Best Original Screenplay for A Real Pain.

Other notable winners included Zoe Saldaña, who took home Best Supporting Actress for Emilia Pérez, and Kieran Culkin, who won Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain. The beloved animated duo Wallace & Gromit also had a strong showing, with Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl winning Best Animated Film and Best Children’s & Family Film.

The Rising Star Award, voted for by the public, went to David Jonsson, while Dune: Part Two secured accolades for its special visual effects. The evening also saw Rich Peppiatt honored for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer for Kneecap.

The ceremony’s outcomes have sparked speculation about their potential influence on the upcoming Oscars, with several winners, including Brody and Madison, seeing their campaigns revitalized. However, the BAFTAs’ tendency to diverge from other awards season trends leaves the final Oscar results uncertain.

The night concluded with a lively afterparty, attended by stars such as Timothée Chalamet and Lupita Nyong’o, capping off a memorable evening for British cinema.
