Adm. Lisa Franchetti Dismissed as Chief of Naval Operations Amid DEI Controversy
Adm. Lisa Franchetti, the first female Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) and member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has been relieved of her duties by President Donald Trump, the Pentagon announced. Franchetti, who assumed the role in November 2023 after being nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate, was among several top military officers dismissed by the Trump administration. Her firing was reportedly linked to her association with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, which the administration has targeted.
Franchetti’s tenure as CNO was marked by significant modernization efforts, including the acceleration of unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, and information dominance capabilities as part of her CNO Navigation Plan. She also introduced a new “Robotic Warfare” general rating to enhance expertise in autonomous systems and AI. Prior to her role as CNO, Franchetti held key positions such as vice chief of naval operations and commander of U.S. 6th Fleet, among others.
Adm. James Kilby, the current vice chief of naval operations, will temporarily assume the duties of CNO until a permanent replacement is nominated and confirmed. The Trump administration has directed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to solicit nominations for Franchetti’s successor, as well as for other high-level Pentagon positions. The abrupt dismissal of Franchetti, who was the first woman to serve on the Joint Chiefs, underscores the administration’s shift in military leadership priorities.
