American Airlines Flight Diverted to Rome Due to Security Concern

An American Airlines flight traveling from New York to New Delhi was diverted to Rome on Sunday, February 23, 2025, due to a security concern. Flight AA292, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport on February 22 and was scheduled to land at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. However, while over the Caspian Sea, the crew reported a potential security issue, prompting the diversion to Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport in Rome.

The bomb threat, sent via email, was later determined to be “non-credible,” according to American Airlines. The flight, carrying 199 passengers and 15 crew members, was escorted by two Italian air force fighter jets as it entered Italian airspace and landed safely in Rome at approximately 5:30 p.m. local time. Upon arrival, the aircraft was inspected by local law enforcement and cleared for departure. The airline stated that the flight would resume its journey to New Delhi after the crew rested overnight.

Passengers were informed of the security situation but were not told about the bomb threat, according to one passenger, Yash Raj, who praised the crew for handling the situation calmly. Many passengers faced visa issues and were unable to enter Italy, prompting American Airlines to arrange alternative flights to New Delhi. Airport operations in Rome were not disrupted during the incident.

This marks another instance of a bomb threat leading to a flight diversion, following similar incidents in India in 2024. American Airlines emphasized that safety and security remain its top priorities and apologized for the inconvenience caused to passengers.
