CDU/CSU Triumphs in Germany's 2025 Federal Election Amid Political Shifts
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), have emerged victorious in Germany’s 2025 federal election, securing 28.6% of the vote, according to preliminary results. The conservative alliance, led by Friedrich Merz, is poised to form the next government, marking a significant shift in German politics. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved its strongest-ever result, coming in second with 20.8% of the vote, while Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) suffered a historic low, dropping to 16.4%.
The election results reflect a fragmented political landscape, with the Greens securing 11.6% and the Left Party surging to 8.8%. However, the pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance failed to meet the 5% threshold required to enter parliament, signaling a dramatic decline for the FDP, which had been part of the previous coalition government. FDP leader Christian Lindner resigned following the party’s poor performance.
Friedrich Merz, the CDU leader, claimed victory and emphasized the urgency of forming a stable government, stating that “the world out there is not waiting for us and for lengthy negotiations.” He hinted at the possibility of a “grand coalition” with the SPD, which would not require a third party, potentially leading to a more stable administration compared to the previous fractious coalition.
The AfD’s strong performance, particularly in former East German states where it won over 30% of the vote, has raised concerns about the party’s growing influence. AfD co-leader Alice Weidel described the result as “historic” and criticized other parties for excluding her party from coalition talks, calling it “voter fraud.”
The election outcome also has implications for Germany’s foreign policy, particularly regarding its relationship with the United States under Donald Trump. Merz acknowledged the need for Europe to become more self-reliant in defense, stating, “After Donald Trump’s statements last week, it’s clear: this American government doesn’t care for Europe.”
As coalition talks begin, Merz aims to form a government by Easter, with the SPD and Greens as potential partners. The results mark a turning point for Germany, with the CDU/CSU set to lead the country amid rising challenges both domestically and internationally.
