Conclave and The Brutalist Triumph at 2025 BAFTA Film Awards
Edward Berger’s Vatican drama Conclave emerged as the big winner at the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards, held on February 16 at London’s Royal Festival Hall. The film, which entered the night with 12 nominations, secured four awards, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Adapted Screenplay, and Casting. In a surprising turn, Mikey Madison won Leading Actress for her role in Anora, beating out frontrunner Demi Moore (The Substance). Anora also won Original Screenplay, while The Substance took home the award for Makeup and Hairstyling. Other notable winners included Emilia Pérez, which won Film Not in the English Language, and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, which dominated the animation categories.
The evening was relatively light on political commentary, though Tennant made a few references to U.S. President Donald Trump in his opening monologue. The event also saw emotional moments, including Warwick Davis dedicating his award to his late wife, Samantha. With the Oscars just weeks away, the BAFTAs provided a strong indicator of potential Academy Award winners, with Conclave and The Brutalist emerging as frontrunners.
