Conclave Triumphs at USC Scripter Awards, Eyes Oscar Glory
The film Conclave, adapted by Peter Straughan from Robert Harris’s 2016 novel, has been making waves in the awards season, most recently winning the USC Scripter Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. The award, presented at a black-tie ceremony at USC’s Town and Gown ballroom, honors the year’s most accomplished film and episodic series adaptations, as well as the works on which they are based. Straughan, previously Oscar-nominated for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2012), has been on a winning streak, having also secured victories at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.
The political drama, set within the Vatican, follows Cardinal Lomeli (played by Ralph Fiennes), the Dean of the College of Cardinals, as he oversees a secretive papal election following the sudden death of the Pope. The film, which has garnered eight Oscar nominations including Best Picture, delves into the tensions, alliances, and hidden secrets that emerge as 118 cardinals gather to choose the next leader of the Catholic Church.
The USC Scripter Award is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race. Last year’s winner, American Fiction, went on to win the Oscar. Straughan’s win for Conclave positions it as a strong contender for the upcoming Academy Awards.
In addition to Conclave, the episodic series award went to Say Nothing, a limited series adapted by Joshua Zetumer from Patrick Radden Keefe’s nonfiction book about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The series, which won for the episode “The People in the Dirt,” was praised for its gripping narrative and historical depth.
The 2025 Scripter selection committee, chaired by Howard Rodman, reviewed 42 film and 66 episodic series adaptations before making its selections. The awards ceremony also honored Rodman with the Ex Libris Award for his exceptional commitment to the USC Libraries and his leadership of the Scripter Selection Committee for the past twelve years.
As the awards season progresses, Conclave remains a standout in the Adapted Screenplay category, with its compelling narrative and critical acclaim solidifying its place as a frontrunner for the Oscars.
