Delhi-NCR Shaken by 4.0 Magnitude Earthquake
On Monday morning, tremors of a 4.0 magnitude earthquake were felt in Delhi-NCR, causing panic among people. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Dhaula Kuan area of Delhi, and its depth was only 5 kilometers. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 5:36 AM, and its tremors were felt for about 35 seconds. Due to the earthquake, many people came out of their homes, although there have been no reports of any damage or loss of life so far.
Experts say that the impact of the earthquake was felt more because its epicenter was within the city and it occurred at a very shallow depth. Delhi-NCR falls under Seismic Zone IV, which is considered sensitive to moderate to severe earthquakes. Dr. OP Mishra, Director of NCS, stated that small earthquakes have occurred in the Dhaula Kuan area before, and this region is geologically active. He mentioned that there is a possibility of aftershocks of 1.2 magnitude following this earthquake, which is normal.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to people to remain calm and stay alert for potential aftershocks. Delhi Police and Fire Services have also not reported any emergency situations. After the earthquake, people shared their experiences on social media, and many expressed surprise at its intensity.
In recent years, Delhi-NCR has experienced several earthquake tremors. In 2020, several earthquakes ranging from 3.5 to 4.4 magnitude occurred in this region. Additionally, tremors from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015 were also felt in Delhi. Experts say that the possibility of earthquakes in this region remains, so people should stay aware of safety measures.
