Delta Air Lines Flight Crash-Lands at Toronto Pearson Airport Amid Severe Weather

A Delta Air Lines flight crash-landed and flipped upside down at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, February 17, 2025, injuring 21 people, including a child. The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. ET when Delta Connection Flight 4819, operated by Endeavor Air, attempted to land amid challenging weather conditions. The CRJ-900 jet, carrying 76 passengers and four crew members, had departed from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. All 80 people on board were safely evacuated, with no fatalities reported.

Deborah Flint, CEO of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, confirmed that 21 passengers were injured, with injuries ranging from minor to critical but not life-threatening. As of Tuesday, 19 passengers had been released from the hospital, while two remained hospitalized. A child was among those critically injured and was transported to The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Emergency responders described injuries including back sprains, head trauma, and nausea from fuel exposure.

The crash occurred during extreme weather conditions, with Toronto Pearson experiencing heavy snowfall and strong winds. Flint noted that the airport had received over 20 inches of snow in recent days, more than the total snowfall during the previous winter. Video footage showed the plane erupting into flames and flipping upside down on the runway, with passengers climbing out onto the snow-covered tarmac. Emergency crews responded swiftly, extinguishing spot fires and evacuating passengers.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash, with assistance from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board. Delta Air Lines has deployed its incident response team to support affected passengers and crew. The crash marks the fourth major aviation incident in North America in recent weeks, raising concerns about flight safety amid severe winter weather. Toronto Pearson Airport has temporarily closed two runways for the investigation, leading to significant flight delays and cancellations.
