Eastern U.S. Ravaged by Major Winter Storm; 13 Lives Lost and Millions Affected
A major winter storm swept across the eastern United States, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming at least 13 lives. The storm, which brought heavy snow, ice, and flooding rain, impacted millions of Americans, with over 140 million under weather alerts on Monday. Kentucky was particularly hard-hit, reporting 12 storm-related deaths, including a child, while Georgia recorded one fatality. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear described the event as “one of the most serious weather events we’ve dealt with in at least a decade,” with widespread flooding, landslides, and power outages affecting all 120 counties in the state.
The storm caused significant disruptions, including the evacuation of nursing homes and hospitals, as well as over 1,000 rescues by first responders. Flooding in southern states like Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia led to dangerous conditions, with some areas receiving up to 7.6 inches of rain. In Tennessee, rising waters forced the evacuation of a nursing home, while in Virginia, residents were urged to evacuate due to life-threatening flash flooding. The Northeast also faced hazardous conditions, with snow turning to sleet and rain, creating treacherous travel conditions.
As the storm moved out, an Arctic blast brought sub-zero wind chills to 24 states, with record-low temperatures expected in the central U.S. The aftermath of the storm left hundreds of thousands without power, and recovery efforts are ongoing. President Donald Trump approved an emergency disaster declaration for Kentucky, releasing federal funds to aid in the response. The storm underscores the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events, highlighting the need for preparedness and resilience in the face of such disasters.
