Eddie Murphy Shines in SNL's 50th Anniversary 'Black Jeopardy' Sketch
Eddie Murphy stole the show during the “Black Jeopardy” sketch at Saturday Night Live’s 50th-anniversary special, delivering a spot-on impression of Tracy Morgan while standing right next to him. The sketch, a fan-favorite recurring segment hosted by Kenan Thompson as Darnell Hayes, also featured Leslie Jones and a surprise appearance by Tom Hanks.
Murphy, dressed in a flashy red satin jacket and oversized gold medallion, brought the house down with his exaggerated portrayal of Morgan. When Thompson quipped, “Don’t you already have a lot of money?” Murphy-as-Morgan shot back, “You gotta have a lot of money if you live like I live. I eat four-cheese lasagna! If it only got three cheeses, I ain’t eatin’ it!” The comedic timing and chemistry between Murphy and Morgan, who played a contestant named Darius, had the audience and cast members in stitches.
The sketch also included a meta moment where the contestants hilariously failed to identify SNL as the answer to a question about a legendary late-night show. Murphy’s Steve Harvey impression during the bit nearly broke Jones and Morgan, who struggled to keep straight faces. Chris Rock made a cameo to deliver a clue about Dana Carvey’s Church Lady character, while Tom Hanks reprised his role as Doug, a MAGA-hat-wearing contestant from a 2016 sketch. Hanks’ character, however, seemed less comfortable this time, mumbling about how more people should go to church to solve today’s problems.
The SNL50 special, which aired on February 16, 2025, brought together past and present cast members to celebrate the show’s legacy. Murphy’s return to Studio 8H was particularly poignant, as his early-1980s tenure helped revive the show during a challenging period. His iconic characters like Gumby and Mr. Robinson left an indelible mark on SNL and comedy history. The anniversary special also featured other beloved sketches and musical performances, but Murphy’s “Black Jeopardy” appearance stood out as a highlight, reminding audiences why he remains a comedy legend.
